The HB215LC-1 is a hybrid excavator that uses what normally would be wasted energy to power its’ swing and boost its’ engine output while saving up to 30% in fuel consumption and emissions. The HB215LC-1 captures the energy produced during swing braking and stores it in a device called an ultra-capacitor. Unlike chemical batteries you may be familiar with in other hybrid vehicles, the ultra-capacitor is able to store energy immediately and make it available for use immediately also. In this way, by using the stored energy to power the swing motor and boost the engine, the HB215LC-1 is very efficient and clean. The more you swing the more fuel you save and the lower amount of emissions you put into the atmosphere. So if you save 30% in fuel consumption, you’ll save a like amount of emissions. This emissions reduction can be very important in urban areas and where environmental restrictions demand greener solutions.

Electric mining trucks run diesel engines to produce electric power to drive their
electric wheels. What if you have an ample external power source like a hydroelectric
dam making inexpensive power? How can you utilize that power to run your mining
trucks and save millions of dollars in fuel? That is exactly the problem Komatsu engineers were asked to solve. And solve it they did by creating trolley systems. In mines with very long uphill hauls, overhead trolley power lines were constructed. To connect the trucks to the overhead trolley lines moveable pantographs were mounted to the trucks above the operator’s cab. After being loaded in the pit, the operator will maneuver his truck under the trolley lines and raise his truck’s pantograph to contact the electrified trolley wires overhead. At this point, power from the trolley will take over and the engine will throttle down to low idle. Using outside power allows the truck to use more power than its engine could produce and to climb grades faster providing for higher production while lowering fuel consumption and emissions dramatically. Engine life will also be extended using Trolley. Trolley isn’t economical for every application. But for those applications where it does make sense the savings can be tremendous.

No Idling Initiative
Today, the average construction machine idles up to 30% of its operating time. This
idle time wastes fuel causes wear on the machine, racks up operating hours and introduces
thousands of tons of emissions unnecessarily into the environment. By reducing idle
time a machine operator can positively impact his company’s bottom line by reducing fuel consumption and turning machine idle hours into actual working, money making hours. In addition, with every reduction in idle time, there is an equal reduction in emissions into the environment. Komatsu created an initiative to use actual customer machine idling data from KOMTRAX to raise awareness among customers to train their operators to actively try to reduce their machine idle time. A series of training items were supplied to assist the customer in his operator training efforts (available through the merchandise site). The initiative produced impressive reductions in idle time, saving participating customers hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel burned and thousands of tons of exhaust emissions.

Tier 4 Interim
All construction equipment manufacturers have to meet Tier 4 interim engine requirements.
But the technology each manufacturer uses to meet the requirements varies. At Komatsu,
we took the approach that Tier 4 interim technology should not hurt performance,
should reduce downtime to a minimum and be as seamless as possible to the operator. And we accomplish those goals through some unique, advanced technologies.
Cutting Edge Electronic Control System – The advanced electronic control system controls air flow, EGR gas flow rate, fuel injection parameters, and after treatment function through intelligent software.
High Pressure Common Rail – Computer controlled high pressure fuel injection ensures a more efficient in-cylinder fuel burn.
Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) – Recirculates cooled exhaust gas to reduce NOx.
Komatsu Variable Geometry Turbocharger KVGT) – By hydraulically controlling the variable geometry turbocharger boost pressure at low speeds can be raised for quick response as well as controlling gas flow into the Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF). Controlling the gas flow into the KDPF means that the temperature in the KDPF can be raised in order to oxidize soot (Particulate Matter (PM)) into CO2. This process is called regeneration.
Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF) – The KDPF collects soot from the exhaust stream by trapping it in its walls.
Hydrocarbon Dosing (HC) – Hydrocarbons (fuel) are introduced, in cylinder or before the KDPF depending on engine size, to create an exothermic chemical reaction within the Komatsu Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (KDOC) to oxidize soot in the exhaust stream. This is part of the regeneration process.
Passive and Active Regeneration – Regeneration is the process of removing PM and NOx from the exhaust stream. Passive regeneration occurs during normal engine operation when exhaust temperature is sufficient. Active regeneration is triggered by the soot load in the KDPF or it can be time based. This process involves optimizing (increasing) exhaust temperature using the KVGT and hydrocarbon dosing. The advantage of the Komatsu method of Active Regeneration is that it has no effect on performance and the operator can continue working.
Crankcase Ventilation Filter (CCV) – The CCV filters blow-by gas to remove suspended oil particles then feeds the remaining gas into the air intake for burning.
Large 7” High Resolution Color LCD Monitor – The easy to read and understand monitor lets the operator know the status of his Tier 4 interim system.

Tier 4 Final
The Tier 4 Final solution builds on the Tier 4 Interim technology. Tier 4 Final adds Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR). SCR uses AdBlueR/Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to reduce NOx by injecting the correct amount of DEF at the proper rate, decomposing NOx into non-toxic water (H2O) and nitrogen gas (N2).
With the addition of the SCR system, a stringent design target of “fluid neutral” or better was established. In a “fluid neutral” situation, the volume of fuel burned plus the volume of DEF consumed is equal to or less than total volume of fuel burned in the previous generation machine. This achievement lowers operating costs for the end customer as DEF typically costs less than diesel in North America.
To ensure product reliability and durability in demanding conditions, Komatsu developed the entire system, including the control software which is critical to the effective operation of the aftertreatment system. This control system is also integrated into the machine’s on-board diagnostic systems and KOMTRAXR, Komatsu’s standard telematics system, which constantly monitors the machines health.

Since 2008, Komatsu has been working on a community-development project to demine and rebuild areas suffering damage from anti-personnel landmines in Cambodia and Angola. Komatsu provides demining machinery (modified bulldozers), developed through our expertise in building durable construction and mining equipment, at no charge.
After demining, development of agricultural land on the safely demined areas can begin. Community rejuvenation and reconstruction projects for digging wells, building schools and repairing and building roads and bridges have also been undertaken.
